He enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, 18th September 1914, stating his occupation as a miner, and his next of kin as his daughter, Mary Eileen Oliver, of Greenwood, British Columbia. He had previously served for two years in the 45th Derbyshire Regiment of Foot and four years in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. He was five feet nine inches in height, had a medium complexion, blue eyes and brown and grey hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had a mole on his right shoulder blade.
